• Allegations of harassment in the workplace continue to mount.
• In 2016, approximately 6,750 claims of sexual harassment were filed with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC). More than $40,000,000 – yes, more than 40 million dollars – was recovered as a result of such claims.
• While some studies indicate that one in four female workers will be the victim of sexual harassment in the workplace, other studies indicate that female workers in some industries are even more likely to be a victim of sexual harassment in the workplace. One study found that three out of four women were subjected to sexual harassment in the workplace. Yes, that's 75% of women!
• More than 15% of the sexual harassment claims filed with the EEOC in 2016 were submitted by male workers.
• Almost ¼ of the complaints filed with the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing (DFEH) in 2015 alleged sexual harassment.

Unresolved conflicts are often cited as underlying sources of workplace violence. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, "Every year, approximately two million people throughout the country are victims of non-fatal violence at the workplace." Unfortunately, this violence sometimes leads to dire results.
Even when violence does not occur, just one incident can leave lasting emotional scars. And, it's no secret that a single claim can destroy a career, damage personal relationships at home and cause irreparable harm to a business.
What Does California Law Require?
All California employers are required to take reasonable steps to prevent sexual harassment in the workplace. Providing training can help an employer establish compliance. And, good training will help an employer do the real job of helping to prevent inappropriate behaviors.
Specific requirements apply to employers of 50 or more employees. California law sets forth when and how much training is required, and the qualifications a trainer must possess for an employer to be able to establish it has met its duty to provide the required training.
2017 is a required harassment and bullying prevention training year for many California employers.
